Having read and understood The Hero's Journey - Act 1 by Joseph Campbell, think about heros you know from your reading or from movies. (Super heroes are not allowed)
There are four stages of 'Separation' for the archetypal hero in The Hero's Journey. Watch the movie clips listed below to see if you can find evidence that links the text (Don't forget that movie scripts are also written texts) to Campbell's stages of separation for heroes.
Stage 1: THE ORDINARY WORLD
Heroes exist in a world that is considered ordinary or uneventful by those who live there. Often people in the ordinary world consider the heroes odd. They posess some ability or characteristic that makes them feel out-of-place.
Usually there is a discovery, some event, or some danger that starts them on the heroic path. Heroes find a magic object or discover their world is in danger. In some cases, heros happen upon their quest by accident.
As they embark on their journey, the heroes enter a world they have never experienced before. It might be filled with supernatural creatures, breathtaking sights, and the constant threat of death. Unlike heroes' home, this outside world has its own rules, and they quickly learn to respect these rules as their endurance, strength, and courage are tested time and time again.

Supernatural does not have to mean magical. There are plenty of hero stories that do not have wizards or witches. Supernatural means, 'above the laws of nature."
Heroes are almost always started on their journey by a character who has mastered the laws of the outside world and come back to bestow this wisdom upon them. This supernatural character oftern gives them the means to complete the quest. Some of the time the gift is simply wisdom. Other times it is an object with magical powers. In every instance it is something the hero needs to succeed.
In pairs decide on a hero you know well... Some examples could be: Harry Potter, Dorothy, Luke Skywalker, Greg from Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Bilbo Baggins, Frodo Baggins, Katniss Everdeen, Eragon, Will Treaty, Cinderella, Alice etc. Choose one of these or one of your own. (You need to have access to the text for the hero you choose)
You will need to:
- Draw a picture of your hero
- Explain how your hero fits in with each of Campbell's stages of separation in The Hero's Journey.
- Support your explanation with evidence in the form of a direct quote from the text (The book, the movie script etc.) (This is the most important part!!!)
